The North East Recycling Forum Appoints New Chair

The North East Recycling Forum is bringing in 2025 by welcoming a new Chair, Jason Mitchell.

At our Annual Conference in November 2024, at Durham Town Hall, longstanding NERF Chair, Jeff Moffitt, annouced his resignation from the role after a 25 year tenure. The NERF Executive met in December 2024 to appoint the new Chair of the NERF, Jason Mitchell.

Jason Mitchell is the Waste Manager for The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and in 2024, received the award for Waste Management Champion of the Year at The Awards for Excellence in Waste Management for the NHS in England. Jason has been attending the North East Recycling Forum meetings since 2009, and has sat on the NERF Executive Team since the beginning of 2023. Over his nine years at The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Jason has shown exceptional dedication to enhancing waste management outcomes across all waste streams. Guided by the waste hierarchy, he actively seeks opportunities to shift the focus from disposal to resource recovery, prioritising cost efficiency and safeguarding NHS budgets.

We're delighted to have Jason expertise guiding the NERF going forward, shaping the NERF agendas and facilitating useful discussions at our quarterly meetings.

Speaking to Jason on his appointment, he said:

"I am truly honoured to be asked to be the new Chair of the North East Recycling Forum if slightly daunted having to follow in the footsteps of Jeff who did so much to establish this forum as the best of its kind anywhere in the country.

The world of waste and resource management is going to go through an extensive period of change in the coming years with much greater emphasis on the higher levels of the Waste Hierarchy: waste prevention; reuse; and the Circular Economy making much more lasting and significant contributions in keeping waste that needs to be recycled, treated, or disposed at the lowest possible levels.

NERF will continue to ensure these developments are at the forefront of our agenda and that our contributors and members are talking about this at every meeting, helping the industry and waste producers to adapt successfully to the changes to come. I am very excited to be a part of that journey."

Our next NERF meeting is taking place on the 20th February 2025, join our mailing list to be the first to hear.
